I think the main reason why I enjoy coming here is because of the family atmosphere that they provide. As soon as you walk in, everyone speaks, everyone smiles. I'm really big on customer service. I worked in customer service kind of all my life, so customer service is huge to me. I would say just the way they make me feel when I walk in, the energy is just always positive. Everyone's smiling. Not only is everyone smiling, everyone has a nice smile. You know what I'm saying? Dr. LaVant is really good at what he does. The staff seems to be very knowledgeable. My schedule is so weird sometimes, they're always willing to reschedule and work with my schedule and I get reminders because I forget. I live all the way in East Valley, so my commute here is probably about 45, 50 minutes easy.

So typically I come when I'm off work. I like to get the early morning time slots before the afternoon so I can beat traffic going home. And sometimes we're on the phone for 5 or 10 minutes, just trying to find a schedule that fits. They do a really good job with figuring out how to get all of us in on the same day so we don't have to make several trips. You know what I'm saying? Throughout the week or throughout the month because we live so far. It's just very accommodating, very knowledgeable. It's a clean, upscale place.

Prior to coming here, I hadn't been to the dentist in 10 years. The only reason why I think I came to the dentist was because I had some plaque literally building up in the bottom tooth and it was starting to interfere with me eating. So I was like, something's going on here. And my buddy, who I went to the Academy with, Demetrius LaVant, this is actually Dr. LaVant's brother. He told me that his brother was a dentist. I said, "Your brother ain't no dentist, man." He gave me his card and his information and I scheduled an appointment and met with him. And shoot, I've been coming here for at least three or four years now.

Momma Letizia's Italian Gravy. These are my mom's recipes and we call it gravy. A lot of people call it sauce, but we grew up calling it gravy. And a lot of people back East are familiar with it being called gravy, and even in Italy too.

I have always loved to cook and people seem to enjoy my cooking and baking, I was looking for something I could do. I've done catering before. I've had my own catering business. And at this time I was working at a church in the kitchen as the manager. We prepared meals. So it was working there for a few years and then the recession hit and everybody got laid off. And so I was trying to think of something I could do. I have to keep the money coming in, let's put it that way.

I just was trying to think of what can I do? And so I had a couple options. I make some delicious tamales and salsa, but then it just wasn't working out. And then I thought, "Well, gosh, you're Italian, Letitia, maybe you should just go ahead and make your mom's Italian gravy." So I brought my mom into my kitchen at home, and as she poured stuff in the pot, I measured it out and made up a recipe because older people don't usually use recipes. They just know how to do it without measuring and all that. So we made up a recipe. I went through trying to find someone to make that for me. They started making my sauce. Of course, we have to make a label. So my sister and my mom and my graphic artists, we've worked together to make the label.

And there was a whole lot more to it than what I ever expected, because my sister-in-law said, "You ought to sell it at farmer's markets." So I started exploring that. At the time, I think it was May when it was finally ready to start getting it out there. Got on the computer, just started looking at farmer's markets. We started out in Sedona. There was a farmer's market in Flagstaff. I started doing that. Cottonwood, Show Low. Since it was summertime, I would just go up to Flagstaff on a Wednesday and do the market. Then the next day I would actually do a sampling in one of the stores that I got it into up there. And then I'd do the Friday market at (Toluca). Thursday night, I think I did Cottonwood. Then I'd go up to Show Low. So I was gone from Wednesday to Saturday nights.

I did that for two summers, and then I got tired of doing that. So we just got in the markets that were in the Valley during the fall in the spring. And we're in also in Whole Foods and AJ's, Natural Grocers. That was quite a journey also. It took a few years to get into there. One of my son's great ideas, "Hey Mom, I can advertise for you and you can advertise for me. And we can share each other's business with everybody." He decided he would bring it in here and just offer it to patients who give them a review.
